Calculator-Controlled Robots: Hands-On Mathematics and
Science Discovery

For Educators Grades 6-8

July 12-16, 2010

This workshop will feature hands-on explorations of pre algebraic concepts using a programmable calculator "robot". Using a series of "missions", participants will investigate problems appropriate for middle school math or science classrooms. A complete mathematics curricular unit accompanies this workshop.

This workshop is designed to introduce mathematics teachers to an innovative, highly interesting, hands-on exploration of algebra and pre-algebra concepts without resorting to solving multiple problems on a worksheet. It was chosen as one of the most original programs produced by NASA in 2007. Titled Calculator-Controlled Robots: Hands-on Mathematics and Science Discovery, it involves transforming a Texas Instrument 83 Plus Graphing Calculator into a programmable wheeled “robot” to solve “missions” while teaching algebra and pre-algebra concepts.

Participants will be housed on the UP campus, register for two graduate-level credits, complete most of the lessons, develop assessments for several lessons, and collaborate with each other on how to use this curriculum to meet the academic standards for their state and grade level.

Follow-through after the workshop will consist of the development of a discussion board or electronic blog for participants, with additional instruction as needed during the school year through a Webinar. All participants will receive the TI 83 Plus Graphing Calculator, the “robot” conversion kit, and a bound copy of the curriculum.
